Chiaroscuro and more
Well, here I am a few days late with my blog posts, but the truth is that I left my laptop charger in Rockport when I left, and am waiting for my roommate to mail it to me back in NY. I am posting this from my work computer. I have been painting though, so I will try to catch up when I get it tomorrow.
While I was in Rockport, I met someone in my friend Corey's gallery that mentioned the term "Chiaroscuro", an Italian word meaning light within the darkness. I realized that this is exactly the style of painting that I am drawn to. I love how an object or face just appears mystically from the dark background, with some of the details vivid, and others obscured by the dark. It kind of reminds me of the concept that 90% of the iceberg is underwater, and not visible. To really understand the painting, you must use your imagination to complete it. I think all art is actually created not only by the artist but by the viewer as well. Perception is everything.
So these are my thoughts for the day - I hope to be posting paintings by tomorrow evening. Stay tuned.
