The gallery is having a fundraiser for the Susan J. Komen foundation on Sept. 24th in the New Canaan gallery. I think I am the token breast cancer artist! So my plan is to show the paintings left from the figurative series I did after I was diagnosed, and add a couple more. This one was one I just finished. 16" x 40" on gallery stretched canvas.

Women with breast cancer not only feel they need to be safe from the cancer, but from the treatment as well. There are times when you just want to fold up in fetal position and find safety.

Protection - 8" x 8" - $150 - SOLD

This symbol is "Protection". Having breast cancer can feel like you're losing your womanhood, and there is this feeling of not only wanting to protect yourself from the cancer, but of the loss of yourself. This image feels to me like she wants to hide from the ordeal that lies ahead - to not only keep her breast safe, but her identity as well.

This is the symbol for breast or "rufang". The first symbol is for "milk", and the second symbol "mama".

This piece is titled "Woman". We are such complicated creatures, and breast cancer has so many layers of understanding to deal with.

Healing 8" x 8" - $150

I haven't painted in a while - It's been a busy summer. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in late June, and after spending the summer doing alternative therapies, I'm now preparing for surgery. The gallery is having a Fall themed show - and since October is Breast Cancer month - I thought I'd do a series on breast cancer, and healing. Here is the first one. The Chinese symbol is the symbol for healing. This and the pieces that will follow are all 8 x 8 with wrapped canvas (no frame)
There will be 9 pieces altogether.

Owls seem to be very popular these days - so it seemed to make sense to do an owl - but it's hard to find a lot of dimension in an owl - they're pretty "flat". Love their eyes though!

Hudson River Heron 12 x 12

I did a small series of bird paintings. I've done roosters, and doves before - but this is a little new. I love the lines of the Blue Heron - such an unusual bird. I think I may do some larger herons too.

Silver Pitcher and Lemons 16 x 20 - $1,100

I always check out second hand stores for pieces for my still lifes. I now have a whole collection of silver and pewter items that are quite beautiful, though they may have a ding or two. I loved the lines of this one. I've been looking for fabric that has stripes in it, so you could see the stripes in the reflection of the silver piece. This fabric was on sale and beautiful - white on white satin and sheer. It was fun arranging it to get interesting folds. Hope you like it.

Loaves and Fishes 11 x 14 - $550

I've been wanting to do a painting of fish and bread for a long time now, to add to my sacred series, but could never find a whole fish locally. Finally, I noticed Price Chopper had a whole red snapper fish, so I grabbed it. While I was setting up the still life, I left the room for a while, and came back to find my cat Marcello standing over it - pondering if it would be worth the effort to eat!!! Luckily, I caught him in time. After I took the photos, I did treat the kitties to the raw fish....they were quite happy!

Here's an 11 x 14 from the same still life shoot. I spend a great deal of time setting up still life's and taking tons of photos, then I narrow them down to the ones that will work best. Out of 100 photos, I may get 5 that I actually paint.

Feeling like I'm getting back in the zone. Feels good. I got this teapot at an antique store in Essex, MA. Kind of felt like spring to add the daisies - but unfortunately, it's not spring outside. Despite a very mild winter thus far, we are getting our first snow storm since October! Can't complain. Spring really is just around the corner.

Can't believe how long it's been since I've posted. It's actually been a few months since I've painted. I never go that long. But first the holidays, then some family issues - I was pleased that it was so easy to get back in the zone again....it felt very therapeutic to paint.

I did this piece as a demo on the street in Saratoga in front of the gallery. Every time I did a demo, I'd sell a painting. Only thing is - I have lots of large new horse paintings that likely won't sell until next summer! Anyone want a horse painting?
